Focal (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is operated by The F Word, Inc. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the Focal iOS app (“the App”). We believe in being straightforward — here’s exactly what we do and don’t do with your data.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

• Email address or Apple ID (via Firebase Authentication)

• Username you choose during onboarding

• Profile photo (if you add one, stored via Firebase Storage)

Activity Data

As you use Focal, we collect:

• Progress logs — what you did instead of scrolling

• App opens — which curated apps you choose through Focal

• Streaks, levels, and attention tally scores

• Focus session data — duration and frequency of app-blocking sessions

Social Data

If you participate in The Field (our social feed), we collect:

• Posts you share (progress logs, milestones, level-ups)

• Reactions you give or receive

Device Permissions

• Screen Time / Family Controls: Focal uses Apple’s Screen Time API to enable app-blocking features. We do not see which specific apps you block. This data stays on your device and is managed entirely by iOS.

• Notifications: If you enable notifications, we store a push notification token to send you daily reminders. You can turn these off at any time in the App or in iOS Settings.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

• Create and maintain your account

• Track your progress, streaks, and levels

• Display your posts and activity in The Field

• Send you optional daily reminders

• Improve the App based on usage patterns

What We Don’t Do

• We do not sell your personal information. Ever.

• We do not share your data with third-party advertisers.

• We do not track which specific apps you block — that data stays on your device via Apple’s Screen Time framework.

• We do not serve ads in Focal.

Third-Party Services

Focal uses the following third-party services to operate:

• Firebase Authentication — for account creation and login

• Firebase Firestore — for storing your activity data and social posts

• Firebase Storage — for profile photos

These services are provided by Google LLC. You can review Firebase’s privacy documentation at firebase.google.com/support/privacy for details on how they handle data.

Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data from our servers within 30 days. Some anonymized, aggregated data may be retained for product improvement purposes.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you

• Delete — request deletion of your account and associated data

• Update — edit your username and profile photo directly in the App

• Opt out — disable notifications at any time

Children’s Privacy

Focal is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.

Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and Firebase’s built-in security infrastructure. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by updating the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of Focal after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
